Pronunciation of Arabic: Mastery of Phonology through Tajweed

In our course, “Mastery of Phonology through Tajweed”, you will perfect your pronunciation of Arabic letters through the art of Quranic recitation, otherwise known as Tajweed (Arabic: ‘Ilm el Tajweed). A skill that is of high importance in the Islamic tradition, Tajweed provides phonological guidelines for students of all backgrounds seeking to master their pronunciation of the Arabic language. At Roots, we offer an encouraging environment for students to drill the skills learned in this course, correcting mispronunciations at the source and employing Tajweed’s strategy of giving each letter its required value. While we will not dive deeply into the history of Quranic recitation and its many variants, we will discuss these topics briefly towards the end of the program to provide a holistic picture of Tajweed and take advantage of the many opportunities it provides for language enhancement.

Language of Instruction:

English with some use of Arabic.

Course Structure:

11 sessions (each session contains an informative video between 5 and 10 minutes long, as well as practice exercises)

30 min of virtual meeting practice.

Learning Objectives:

1. Pronounce each letter of the Arabic alphabet according to the standards of Arabic pronunciation.
2. Understand the history and institutionalization of tajweed.
3. Gain exposure to spoken and written Arabic.
4. Master a working vocabulary of Arabic related to Tajweed science.
